SEPO’s Approach

At the core of SEPO’s approach is a belief that our communities in northeastern Wisconsin and western Zambia are interconnected. The connection between the two communities starts with our co-founder, Mushe.

Mushe grew up in Mabumbu, Zambia where the principles of ubuntu were firmly ingrained. After making Oshkosh his home, Mashebe struggled with the mindset of many in the community that maintain a very closed worldview and understanding of Oshkosh’s place in the world.

SEPO seeks to challenge that mindset by increasing global awareness and global literacy – to counter the perception that Oshkosh exists in a vacuum. In a country that routinely lauds the value of “independence”, SEPO actively asks our community to acknowledge our interdependencies. This is not always easy or welcomed work – but along the way we have found allies, co-conspirators, and advocates who understand the importance of a more global perspective.

SEPO believes that both communities benefit from deepening connection, interaction, and mutual support. Our work seeks to engage deeply in both communities with an emphasis on sustainability, education, and progress as one.
